Hip dysplasia is a common heritable condition in dogs, with a higher prevalence reported in Golden Retrievers. Checking our Golden Retrievers for hip dysplasia before breeding them is of utmost importance for several reasons. In dogs with hip dysplasia, the hip joint does not develop correctly, leading to instability, malformation and degeneration of the joint. As the condition progresses, arthritis can develop, leading to chronic pain and further impairment of mobility. Treatment usually involves medication management and or surgical intervention. Hip dysplasia can significantly impact a dogs quality of life, furthermore causing expensive medical treatments. We strive to produce healthy puppies and by carefully selecting breeding pairs with good hip scores, breeders can work towards improving the overall hip health of the breed overtime. This helps ensure that future generations of Golden Retrievers have a reduced risk in developing dysplasia.
